Faculty of Psychiatry - Guntur Medical College

The Department of Psychiatry was started in 1958 with a qualified Asst. Surgeon. A post of Professor was created in 1967 and Dr. A. Sankara Rao was posted to this assignment. Dr.K. Bhujanga Rao, Dr.N.V. Ramana Rao, Dr.M.Jagannadham and Dr.D.Phani Bhushan are the other Professors who worked in this Department earlier. Currently three qualified Psychiatrists are on the rolls. Facilities for out-patient & in-patient services are available. The out patient department runs daily and is thronged by as many as 95 to 110 patients (new & old patients inclusive). Physical & Psychological modalities of treatment are given.

The number of beds in the ward is 30. The Department serves many patients from all coastal and surrounding districts of Andhra Pradesh. Undergraduate medical students are posted to the Department for learning basics of Psychiatry for a period of fifteen days. PG course leading to DPM was started in the year 1985 with an intake of two candidates per year in this institution. Post graduate students in MD (Medicine) (Dermatology) & (Paediatrics) are also posted to the Department. Dr.N.Murali Krishna, MD, has taken charge in Guntur Medical College, Guntur from Dr.C.Radha Krishna Raju, Professor  i/c. & HOD of Psychiatry.

In-Patient new ward is inaugurated on 05.11.2013 and extended Out Patient department on 06.11.2013 (with 9 cubicles and waiting area for Male and Female seprarately of Out Patient Department) by Dr.Ch.Mohana Rao, Superintendent, Govt. General Hospital, Guntur.

Every year 2 post graduate MCI recognized admissions are available in the Department of Psychiatry GGH/GMC, Guntur.
